Acknowledged Google AI Overviews Issues and Upcoming Fixes

Google has admitted there were problems with its new AI Overviews feature and is working on solutions.

After strange and incorrect answers from AI Overviews went viral, Google explained that many of the screenshots were fake but some issues were real. In their statement on ‘Google AI Overviews Issues,’ they mentioned that they will now limit AI responses to nonsensical, satirical, or health-related questions.

AI Overviews is supposed to simplify searches by providing direct answers without needing to visit multiple websites. However, it sometimes gave wrong answers because it relied on bad information from the internet.

Liz Reid, Head of Search, said in a blog post that while AI Overviews has been mostly successful, there were some glitches. She explained that fake screenshots were circulating, and encouraged users to check results themselves. She also admitted that some answers were indeed “odd, inaccurate, or unhelpful.”

An example of the problem is the question “How many rocks should I eat?” which led AI Overviews to a joke article suggesting eating one rock a day. AI Overviews struggled to distinguish between serious and humorous content.

Google is improving AI Overviews by:

  • Better detecting nonsensical or satirical queries.
  • Limiting user-generated content in responses to avoid misleading advice.
  • Restricting the use of AI Overviews for less helpful queries.
  • Adding more safeguards for responses related to news and health topics.

Despite the funny errors, AI Overviews aims to provide helpful answers, though users should still be cautious. AI doesn’t create new information; it pulls from existing internet data, so it faces the same challenge as humans in determining what’s true.

Ironically, AI might be making it harder to tell fact from fiction.
