Global AI Conference 2024: Charting the Future of Ethical AI with UN’s Landmark Resolution
The United Nations (UN) General Assembly approved a resolution aimed at creating AI systems that are safe, secure, and trustworthy, aligning with the goals of sustainable development. Endorsed by more than 120 member states, this draft code of conduct represents a worldwide pledge to include human rights considerations throughout the entire life cycle of AI, from its inception to its application.
The General Assembly acts as a principal platform within the UN, uniting all 193 member states to discuss issues impacting the global community. This informal resolution, which does not require a vote, gains support through “co-sponsorship” from members.
In Global AI Conference 2024 crafted by US, the resolution recognizes the role of AI in expediting progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are aimed at guiding the global community towards a future that is both prosperous and stable.
Moreover, the resolution brings attention to the increasing digital divide, noting the concentration of AI advancements in Western and developed nations, especially the USA.
It advocates for global unity and assistance to help developing nations achieve equal and fair access to technology, aiming to bridge the digital divide and boost worldwide digital literacy.
The US National Security Advisor labeled the resolution a “historic advancement” in the regulation of AI.
In her speech before the resolution, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US Ambassador to the UN, praised the collaborative effort leading to this agreement, suggesting, “The inclusive and positive discussion that culminated in this resolution should set a precedent for future dialogues on AI-related challenges.”
She discussed how the resolution aids the UN’s efforts, with contributions from entities such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), UNESCO, and the Human Rights Council, towards establishing a global framework for AI governance.
Thomas-Greenfield emphasized that the UN should manage this technology to ensure it benefits humanity, prioritizing human dignity, safety, human rights, and freedoms.
