Unfortunately, we still don’t have any treatments that can definitely slow down or stop the progression of this debilitating disease. Traditionally, searching for a potential drug involves testing thousands of chemical compounds, which is not only costly but also time consuming and mostly unsuccessful.
The Cambridge team, led by Professor Michele Vendruscolo, uses a clever five-step process involving machine learning. They start with a small batch of compounds that might stop the harmful build-up of a protein linked to Parkinson’s, known as alpha-synuclein. They test these compounds, use the results to improve their AI model, and quickly repeat the cycle. This iterative method has already increased the success rate of finding effective compounds from 4% to over 20%.
What’s more, the AI is finding compounds that are not just potentially more effective but also require lower doses and offer greater chemical variety than those previously known.
